Adm. Brian Christine’s appointment as assistant health secretary and head of the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps — a government agency under the Surgeon General — drew attention as officials addressed concerns over the spread of the virus. Critics questioned whether the official had the appropriate public health expertise to serve as the administration’s lead spokesperson during an infectious disease response.
